Standing there on the wide flank of steps, I stop to catch breath\u2026because Venezia lies at my feet.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Yes, arriving in Venice is stunning! But you don\u2019t have to be a millionaire to enjoy the most beautiful city in the world. Really! A 2 night stay or a few days in Venice can be totally affordable and it\u2019s super easy to organize your own trip here. Flexiblity is the key for enjoying an exciting 2 day Venice itinerary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Venice is a Floating City<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Inhabited since the 9th century, Venice is an \u2018artificial\u2019 floating city which has been created over the ages in the Venetian sea lagoon. Millions of hardwood posts were driven down into the seabed to shore up a network of platforms which bond 118 small islands together. Isn&#8217;t that amazing?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-foundation-poles-st-marks-basin-italy.jpg\" alt=\"The poles that Venice is built on in St Mark's Basin\" class=\"wp-image-8468\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The poles that Venice is built on in St Mark&#8217;s Basin<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Venice is linked to the Italian mainland by the Liberty Bridge (Ponte della Libert\u00e0), a 4km causeway where trains and buses bring hordes of visitors and commuters to the traffic-free historical centre each day. Late afternoon and most people are leaving the \u2018centro storico\u2019, workers going home to satellite towns such as Mestre or Marghera, along with tourists booked into wallet-friendly hotels on the outskirts of town.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-grand-canal-view-glass-bridge-italy.jpg\" alt=\"The Grand Canal seen from the glass bridge, Venice\" class=\"wp-image-8469\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Grand Canal seen from  Calatrava &#8216;glass&#8217; Bridge, Venice <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Juan and I are contra current, having sourced a discreet hotel hidden deep in the heart of old Venice. The Grand Canal beckons wide and majestic in the twilight hour, chandeliers glow alluringly from Palazzo front windows on the opposite bank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Venice is the city with the most bridges in the world (well almost, there are 400 or so if you\u2019re counting, marginally less than Hamburg or Pittsburg) but surprisingly there are few crossing the main waterfront. The phone app shows Calatrava Bridge on the right-hand side of the train station as the way to go, a porter and commonsense say take the stone arched bridge to the left (Ponte degli Scalzi).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-canal-novo-dorsoduro-italy.jpg\" alt=\"View along canal Novo i Dorsoduro district in Venice, Italy\" class=\"wp-image-8441\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canal Novo in Dorsoduro Sestieri , Venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">We eventually find &#8216;Locanda Gaffaro&#8217;, trundling our wheelie case over the umpteen humpback footbridges which span a labyrinth of tiny canals. GoogleMaps is clever, their route to our guesthouse doesn\u2019t look direct but it avoids all those little \u2018canali\u2019, and is much quicker. This is Dorsoduro \u2018Sestieri\u2019, one of six ancient districts that make up Venice. The major sights aren\u2019t that far as the proverbial crow or Venetian seagull flies\u2026but humans need a roundabout route to skirt those canals. Don\u2019t expect to find the landmarks you\u2019re looking for straight off, you\u2019ll come across the iconic sites at some point, but meanwhile see the magic of \u2018off-route\u2019 Venice on your meanderings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The tourist street plans are confusing as usual and wall signs mislead you enticingly under archways and past out-of-the-way craft shops.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-campo-santa-margherita-fish-stall-italy.jpg\" alt=\"A seafood stall in Campo Santa Margherita in Venice, Italy\" class=\"wp-image-8440\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Seafood stall in Campo Santa Margherita, Venice <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Campo Santa Margherita is a large square surrounded by traditional houses which have been here since the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century, although most of them are \u2018ristorantes\u2019 nowadays. Fat seabirds are eyeing up two market stalls selling the fish and seafood that Venice is famous for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">I check out the menus. Mid-priced restaurants with a professional service and <a href=\"https:\/\/dianashealthyliving.com\/traditional-italian-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traditional Italian food<\/a>, tiny old \u2018osterias\u2019 where you stand outside with your drink to avoid paying tax, and a trendy place which announces a litre of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetravelbunny.com\/aperol-spritz-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aperol spritz<\/a> and a platter of \u2018fritura\u2019 for only 10\u20ac. Ponte di Rialto (1591) is one of these focal points, an elaborate white stone bridge which crosses the Grand Canal -the main artery that courses through Venice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Shallow steps lead up and down from a central portico where pedestrians push past the tiny jewellery shops set into the arches on either side. \u2018Il Canalasso\u2019 courses slowly below, like a real-life movie scene which you can watch from the ornate balustrades, along with dozens of silly-smile selfie posers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-rialto-bridge-grand-canal-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Ponte di Rialto is the most famous bridge in Venice (1591)\" class=\"wp-image-8424\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ponte di Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, Venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">This is San Polo district, and the famous Rialto fish market is a minute\u2019s walk from here, set up under high gothic arcades beside the canal. Unbelievably, the morning \u2018mercato pescheria\u2019 together with an open-air fruit and vegetable market have taken place in this vicinity for almost 1000 years! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Get here early enough and you can watch the fishermen unloading the night\u2019s catch from the lagoon, as their ancestors have done for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-rialto-bridge-views-grand-canal-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Views over the Grand canal from Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy\" class=\"wp-image-8434\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Views over the Grand Canal from Rialto Bridge, venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Venice\u2019s oldest church borders one edge of the marketplace. Historically chronicled from the 12th century, local legend describes how a carpenter originally built <a aria-label=\"San Giacomo di Rialto (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.museodellamusica.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Giacomo di Rialto<\/a> as homage to St James in the year 421. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">A large golden clock shines down from the Gothic fa\u00e7ade, six marble columns support the cross-shaped interior where you can admire Vivaldi\u2019s collection of antique instruments and buy tickets for classical concerts \u2013 Venetian musical events take place across the city in the authentic ambience of these ancient places of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\" id=\"st-marks-square\"><strong>St Mark\u2019s Square<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">San Marco district draws the most crowds so the 10 minute walk from Ponte Rialto Bridge across to Piazza San Marco does take longer than expected, no doubt because I\u2019m stopping to take photos of everything around me!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-st-marks-cathedral-square-italy.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Basilica in St Marks Square, Venice\" class=\"wp-image-8449\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Piazza San Marco , Venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">St Mark\u2019s Square is enormous, surprisingly so. Alleyways full of souvenir shops open suddenly onto a grand Piazza lined by colonnaded buildings and towers. This is one of the most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/rome-in-1-day-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Colosseum and Vatican in Rome<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The heartbeat of Venice since the 9<sup>th<\/sup> century, the town\u2019s most famous public square is more of a &#8216;T&#8217; shape really, 3 squares in one &#8211; the two marble lion statues of Piazzetta dei Leoncini guard one side of the legendary Basilica and leads straight on to the large rectangular Piazza itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Meanwhile, Piazzetta San Marco runs along the main frontages of St Mark\u2019s Basilica and the Doge\u2019s Palace towards the lagoon, where 2 great historic columns crowned by the city\u2019s Patron Saints are the focus of attention.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-doges-palace-st-marks-square-italy.jpg\" alt=\"The Doge's Palace in St Mark's Square, Venice\" class=\"wp-image-8448\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Doge&#8217;s Palace, Venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The morning drizzle turns to light rain, and the inevitable happens\u2026 you\u2019ve heard about the waters rising in Piazza San Marco? Welcome to \u2018acqua alta\u2019! The high tide spills over from the lagoon and washes up the storm drains to cause occasional flooding. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-st-marks-square-aqcua-alta-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Waters rising in Piazza San Marco, Venice\" class=\"wp-image-8435\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Acqua Alta in Piazza San Marco, Venice <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Boardwalk \u2018passerelles\u2019 are strategically placed across the public square for the long queues waiting to enter St Mark\u2019s Basilica. Kiosks sell long waterproof overshoe things that reach up to your thighs to protect footwear and trousers from the \u2018high water\u2019, but the weather\u2019s warm so I just roll my pants up and slop along through the puddles quite happily in sandals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\" id=\"gondolas-and-bridge-of-sighs\"><strong>Gondolas and Bridge of Sighs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-gondolier-saint-marks-basin-lagoon-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Gondolier standing by Venice Lagoon near St Mark's Square\" class=\"wp-image-8426\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gondolier standing by Venice Lagoon, Italy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Venice is famous for its Gondolas and the main &#8216;servizio gondole&#8217;  stations are right here on the lagoon quay. Just like an <a aria-label=\"Italian movie scene (opens in a new tab)\" class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.travelingwithmj.com\/movies-set-in-italy-youll-love-or-hate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italian movie scene<\/a>, dark slim gondoliers in blue and white, or red and white striped, long-sleeved t-shirts, wait nonchalantly for eager passengers. And it\u2019s not madly expensive if you\u2019re a party of four or six. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Further along the promenade \u2018fondamento\u2019 there are Vaporetto stations \u2013 these public ferry boats steer along the larger canals, skirt Venice on the sea side, and trip out to the Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-gondolas-st-marks-basin-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Gondolas on St Mark's waterfront canal in Venice, Italy\" class=\"wp-image-8430\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gondolas on St Mark&#8217;s waterfront in Venice, Italy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Watching the \u2018Gondolieri\u2019 is quite fascinating, they\u2019re unique in the world so who cares if it\u2019s touristy\u2026the shiny black gondolas glide slowly through the smaller canals, which water taxis and barges can\u2019t navigate, gliding under low little bridges which are all designed distinctively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">One of the most famous, Bridge of Sighs is just beside the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/palazzoducale.visitmuve.it\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doge\u2019s Palace &#8211; the \u2018Palazzo Ducale\u2019<\/a>. Cameras and phones are allowed although you\u2019re not meant to take photos inside! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Actual entrance to visit the \u2018<a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.basilicasanmarco.it\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Basilica di San Marco<\/a>\u2019 is free but you pay to see the most valuable antiquities, such as the Pala d&#8217;Oro gold altarpiece or the riches in the Treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-st-marks-cathedral-dome-ceiling-italy.jpg\" alt=\"Gold mosaic ceiling inside the dome of St Mark's Basilica, Venice\" class=\"wp-image-8446\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gold mosaic ceiling inside the dome of St Mark&#8217;s Basilica<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Built on a much earlier site, the main part of the temple dates to 1063 and comprises a Byzantine-style Greek cross nave with five dome cupolas, which was later embellished with Gothic spires and sculptural roof decoration. This includes a small museum where the emblematic \u20184 gilt horses of St Mark\u2019s\u2019 are carefully kept on display (the horse statues on the Basilica fa\u00e7ade are relicas). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">It\u2019s worth the steep climb up stone stairs to contemplate the Cathedral hall from above and see the gold mosaic ceiling in close detail. But it\u2019s the outside roof gallery that really fascinates me! I can\u2019t! Venice\u2019s famous clock tower is an unusual architectural and mechanical feat, built over the archway entrance to St Mark\u2019s square in 1493. The foundation piles are sunk down deep into solid ground. Houses have a raised wooden platform outside where watercraft can tie up, and steps lead upwards to the front door as the main rooms are sensibly built well above water level. The grandiose hotels bring in guests by private gondol, so celebrities and the affluent coolly arrive in true water-city style. Luggage is loaded onto a separate barge.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kalitravel.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-canal-scene-gondolas-italy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8458\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gondolas on the canals of Venice<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">There are no roads inside Venice itself, no trams, vans, cars or scooters, which is great for the environment and peacefully relaxing. Goods and supplies are brought into the merchant port, loaded onto courier boats and finally delivered by pushcart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Although you can drive over from the mainland along the causeway and park by the coach station (which tends to be expensive), people generally come to Venice by train or bus, or boat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:18px\">* Venice is close to a lot of interesting places which are simple to get to by train.
